Tom Payne
Tom Payne's work is mainly figurative, from full sized down to a couple of inches tall. At the smaller level he makes solid figures with details modelled roughly (as pictured), at the larger level the form is coiled first then modelled. Tom uses tools as little as possible, preferring to use his hands. To heighten this effect, he does not use glazes, leaving the surface naked to show building marks and finger imprints. Although poise and character of a piece are more important than details, Tom still achieves a naturalistic result that people can respond to. Tom's pieces are fired to 1140 degrees and smoke fired. Tom studied at Kent Institute of Art & Design (BA hons - Ceramics 2000) and is a member of KPA, represented by StArt (St-art-biz).
