The basic form of the sphere provides the core of this work and combined with an interest in geology, fossils and patterns in nature feeds the current output. I work as intuitively as possible and the hand built form will dictate its nature early in the making process. After refining, coloured slip is applied; the surface is burnished and the work fired to 1000 degrees C. Patterns are created using various masks prior to smoke firing with paper, wood shavings and sawdust - a process that produces random and, sometimes, completely unexpected results. It also provides the organic, sensuous and tactile qualities that excite me. Finally, after cleaning, the work is polished with pure beeswax, enhancing both colour and shine. Sometimes the work is pierced so that beaten copper, silver or gold can be added - Penny White |
