Lorna Brown
Portraying the familiar has been the cornerstone of my work. The more knowledge I have of the subject, the more liberties I take in the treatment. I paint or draw my impression of the motif, heightening certain aspects to convey an atmosphere or sensation that befits the subject. Much of my attention focuses on the effect of light in the image, the balance, intensity and subtlety of which creates the medium for the viewer to try to find something of the experience I had encountered. Influences have included Chaim Soutine, David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach, Gwen John, Ivon Hitchins, Sheila Fell and Annabel Gault. |
